UNIVERSITY IN CHUNIAN (original) (raw)

UNIVERSITY IN CHUNIAN: The history of Chunian city, located about 80km south of Lahore, dates back 500 years. Recently, there has been much talk about having a university named after Bulleh Shah, the much respected 17th century mystic who was a philosopher and poet known as the father of ‘Punjabi enlightenment’. The proposed university is likely to be established in Kasur district. That being so, Chunian is the best place to house the institution for it is culturally rich and has an apt location for the purpose. The authorities should consider these factors.

DAMS CONSTRUCTION: The construction of dams is the need of the hour for efficient use of water and addressing the energy crisis. Unfortunately, the matter has been neglected for long due to vested interests and lack of technical expertise. There are only two dams, Mangla and Tarbela, that are supposed to meet our energy needs. The government should realise the importance of dams and take steps accordingly.

HOUSING SOCIETIES: This is with reference to the report “Co-op housing societies won’t be allowed to use state institutions’ names any more” (Jan 2). I think the Islamabad High Court ruling should include private housing societies as well. Furthermore, the law should be endorsed by the Supreme Court and be applied retrospectively so that the reputation of institutions may not be tarnished anymore.

QUETTA WOES: In the good old days, Quetta was known for its beauty and its educational institutions, but, unfortunately, all one hears about the city nowadays carries negative connotations; blasts, kidnappings, killings, etc. Even more unfortunate is the fact that no action has ever been taken against those who robbed the locals of their peaceful life, and there seems to be no interest on the part of the authorities to restore the beauty of Quetta.
