It's less learned about ground types than the whole premise of the Anime has changed. It would almost be fair to consider Kanto-Johto and Hoenn-Kalos as occurring in separate, realities. Pokemon was only supposed to last a single season, with Ash originally the victory of the League championship and Mewtwo Strikes Back being the movie series final (there is even old story board footage from an early version of the movie that shows the series epilogue, Delia Ketchum playing with her young granddaughter, the supposed child of Ash and Misty). The entire cosmology of the first few seasons, especially Kanto and the Orange islands was different from both the games and the modern anime. You had the giant Dragonite from Bill's Lighthouse. The Ancient Gastly from Maiden's Peak, who could use telepathy and had powers more like that of a legendary Pokemon, Sabrina with her powers and Santa's Lapras. Pikachu was an oddity, in the Japanese they mention that he was more powerful to begin with and that after what Flint did to him, it increased the amperage of his attacks to the point that ground types had no protection against him. Heck even The School of Hard Knocks mentions Pokemon levels. Then we had things the Crystal Onix (weak to fire, perhaps in the process of becoming a Steelix) in the Orange islands, and the Pinkin berry Pokemon. Or how about those weird giant Pokemon that were some how responsible for the destruction of an ancient civilization. Again it's less learning than it is quite frankly a different series. In the old season, individual common Pokemon could be strange and have powers and abilities no other had (That Gastly or the Dragonite for example) The entire world was mystery, with just the normal common Pokemon being fascinating creatures, the 5 legendaries hardly appeared, Mew wasn't seen until the first move and I think Zapdos' debut was in Power of One. Sorry for my diatribe, I guess it's just the rantings of an old fan from Gen I complaining about how the times have changed.
