You won't ever guess what inspired me to paint this, haha!
It was a close-up photo of a fringed piece of cloth: fav.me/d3b6ixt (thanks a lot to thewaywefall thewaywefall.deviantart.com/ )

Painted on a Wacom tablet in Painter, many hours of work...

I was never happy with the spaceship, so I finally managed it to paint a new, more satisfying one (and I felt like mirroring the image would make the composition better):
