Description
She was a talented artist who at the time, was unfortunately treated as lesser than and looked down upon for her battles with addiction. I remember so many fellow teenagers at the time being so disrespectful towards her due to her addiction and it always really upset me. I have always believed and will always believe that those with addiction deserve help and understanding. Addiction is a mental health problem and I believe that there should be more resources out their for folks who need a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, or someone to listen to them. These people are not and never will be lesser than those who aren't addicted to substances. They just need to be more understood and cooperated with by professionals.
I remember Amy as a strong woman with a beautiful voice who paved the way for a young me to later go on to listen to Jazz, Motown, Soul and so on. The music that inspired Amy was primarily from black culture, more specifically black American culture. Through Amy's music, I learned about music that a young, white Irish kid would normally never learn about or at least not learn about until adulthood. I remember her fondly for that.
Rest in peace and power, Amy Winehouse!
