Description

This is my interpretation of a terraformed Mars. Most images like this go for a sea level at the 0km (datum) line, and tend to be much greener. Here I've assumed that Mars will always be a cold, dry world, even with imports of volatiles from comets or other planets, and that the effort to reach the 0km shoreline won't be considered worthwhile. So this version of Mars has smaller, shallower seas and a thinner atmosphere, with the habitable zone restricted to the lowlands. At higher altitudes, atmospheric water vapour quickly freezes out, forming glaciers along the edge of the habitable zones, then a thin coating of frost as the altitude increases further. The Tharsis bulge pushes even beyond this level, practically into space, forming a precipitation-shadow to the east as clouds are pushed around its bulk by the prevailing winds.

Textures done in GIMP based on NASA data, rendered in Blender.
