I busted out the doors of my school this afternoon trying to escape the drudgery of Jr. High. My students were acting more wound up than usual. I know, Jr. High kids are always wound up....but today they were in rare form. The joys of teaching in an inner-city urban school is the fact that the kids have little to look forward to when they get home. Parents may be drunk, kid may get hit, police may be stopping by for a friendly visit, etc. I am trying to balance compassion with wanting to scream at students for being so damn ignorant to whom is trying to help them out of their current condition! Unfortunately, this is often my daily reality. H

I decided I couldn't stay in the house one more weekend. The weather here in Utah has been horrible. Every weekend it has been raining or snowing. So today I decided I was done! I was going to get out of the house, break out my kayak, and head to a local reservoir. It was about 49 degrees with a slight breeze. It was overcast, but it wasn't raining or snowing! So I launched my kayak and had been paddling about 4 minutes. I was in the process of adjusting the seat when my hand slipped off the side of the kayak I had been using to keep myself balanced. My weight suddenly shifted to the right and that was it, over went my kayak and I plunged int

I had to make a decision. I hate making decisions sometimes. It's easy to make decisions like not doing drugs, speeding, and being faithful to my wife. Those are easy. It's the decisions that wouldn't do any harm or have dire consequences that are the kickers. I hate being told no! I'm a grown adult....I can do what I want right? But when my gut tells me no, then I get really ticked off because my gut is always right. So tomorrow is another day. I will go do what I do every day. But there will be a little part of me that will always think, "What if I would have chosen to....?"
