Description

After 2 years in service, 5451 the J3 Super Hudson, one of several given the selkirk front end when first manufactured, is seen on display in New York City next to a Grand Trunk Western Railroad U4 Northern, most likely 6400, and the old Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's N1 Duplex locomotive, 5600 George H. Emmerson, at the World Fair in 1939. After the war, 5451 lost her streamline casing when postwar needs meant maintenance was of more importance than fashion. Just prior to the end of the conflict, 5600 lost his working career and was junked by 1950 while 5451 served the old New York Central Railroad for another 10 years before being withdrawn by 1956 and scrapped like the other 274 Hudsons. While 5451 and George H. Emmerson are both lost to time, a few U4 Northerns are still around in railroad museums.
