You could hear the mourning of the birds today, as if their whole world had crashed down in the silence of the night—and, essentially, it had. The cries of the crows was nearly as deafening, not because they were establishing their dominance, as they always did in their daily morning rituals, but because they too had lost something in the changing of the land and the felling of the trees.
