Viking Shielmaiden

The Viking female warriors really existed! For a long time old reports about shieldmaiden and Viking warrior women were dismissed as legends and myths, after all the Vikings (around 790 to 1070 AD) were considered a rough society dominated by men...
But then DNA tests proved the opposite. The most famous example: The warrior women of Birka (Denmark), was declared to be a man and high-ranking Viking warrior – based on the weapons and objects found in the grave. And yet, there is a woman in the grave of Birka!

Many Viking myths and legends also tell of brave and courageous women who went on voyages of discovery, fought alongside the men and even took leading positions in battle. Today there is little reason to doubt these reports from the Viking Age (793 to 1066 AD).
