Sky Fury by ArtistIssues on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

The Sky Fury is my redesign of the Light Fury. They are a different breed of Night Fury, the same way a greyhound and a German Shepherd are both dogs with vastly different appearances and different abilities. (I think Sand Wraiths are also Fury breeds, in my headcanon, but that’s beside the point.)

Sky Furies:

- Are designed like Clouded Leopards mixed with Aoxolotls (vs Night Furies, who are designed like Panthers)
- Come in patterns of white with blues and grays.

- Have warm-colored eyes.
- Swim better than Night Furies and move just as nimbly, but cannot fly for as long or strike as hard.
- Cannot completely turn invisible; instead, they camouflage best with clouds in the daytime and can shift their scales to briefly match their surroundings.
- Breathe a smokier, “dirtier” looking plasma blast in short bursts rather than one concussive explosion.
- Cannot echolocate.
- Do not have retractable teeth.
- Only vocalize when “singing,” like a pod of whales.
- Otherwise, they communicate with clicks.
- Typically live in a flock along with Night Furies.
- Mate and spend 30 years socializing and building flocks in the Hidden World before migrating to Grimmel’s Archipelago on the Surface World, where they have their ancestral nesting grounds. They spend 25 years raising their young and teaching them to hunt on the Surface before migrating back to the Hidden World to start the cycle all over again.

- The Hidden World is not returned to using the Fury Flock’s memory, since a lot of the world can change in 25 years. Instead, some of the Hidden World’s algae emits a vibration that only Night Furies and their echolocation skills can sense. Therefore, Sky Furies are usually in a Fury Flock led by Night Furies.

- Sky Furies are social. They hate living alone.
- Sky Furies adhere to a complex social hierarchy within a Flock.

- The Fury that strikes first in a hunting party is the Fury that gets to eat first.

- Furies often participate in races.
- A Fury that is outcast or being punished will be forced to eat alone, separate from the rest of the Flock.

In my rewrite for HTTYD3, most of the story revolves around Hiccup and Toothless discovering the Fury Flock, which is led by the last Wild Night Fury, and has been made extremely hostile to humans. This is because their nesting grounds were taken over by Grimmel’s People, and the resulting 25-year war caused almost all of the older Fury generation to be killed off. Now the Flock consists mainly of young Furies who were hatched on Grimmel’s Island and have never been to the Hidden World, led by one old Night Fury. They view people as prey.

Valka coaches Hiccup on how to let Toothless appear to be wild and free and try to join the social Fury Flock, while he sort of watches from a hidden, observant distance and sneaks onto Toothless’ back for the Flock’s hunting raids. This way, Hiccup and Toothless learn more not just about the Fury Flock, but about the strange new armada that is creeping into the Barbaric Archipelago and seems to be at war with the Fury Flock.
