Lunaspis species v1 by avancna on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Description
The petalichthyid placoderm, Lunaspis, possibly the best known and best studied of all petalichthyid placoderms. Their fossils have been found in Early Devonian marine strata in Germany, China and Australia. The one with wing-like spines is L. broilii, while the one with shorter, stouter spines is L. heroldi.
Petalichthyids are presumed to be bottom-dwelling predators that snapped up unwary prey, though this is an educated guess as we still have not found any specimens with intact mouths or jaws.
