The Goddess Project: Cheng-E by AydenGracePhoto on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

The first piece in my "Goddess Project" that was done for my thesis based on today’s modern religions that are not only monotheistic but also patriarchal, and many sects confine women to traditional gender roles: homemaker, mother, musician, nurse. While goddesses of the ancient world often represented these roles, they were also embraced as creators, warriors, and lovers. Women of strength.

This was based on Cheng-E, a more traditional moon goddess.

There are at least three stories surrounding Cheng-E and her tale. Despite the differences each tale weaves, there are general consistencies to her story. Cheng-E, separated from her life in heaven is cast to earth, takes a potion of immortality that causes her to float to the moon where she watches over earth from her heavenly perch. During her festival, she is presented with offerings and goods that are intended to gain good fortune from her for the coming year.
