Description

Day 13: Campylocephalus

Campylocephalus mermaids were a type of ancient marine eurypterid merfolk that lived during the Permian period, around 326 to 251 million years ago. They belonged to the family Hibbertopteridae and had heavily armored bodies with a thick exoskeleton that helped them regulate their buoyancy underwater and protect them from predators. They were sweep-feeders, meaning that they had modified spines on their forward-facing prosomal appendages that allowed them to rake through the substrate of their living environments. Campylocephalus had a flat head with a distinctive curve, giving it a unique appearance that differentiated it from other sea scorpion merfolk. Fossils of Campylocephalus have been discovered in Russia and other parts of Europe, providing valuable information about the evolution and diversity of marine arthropod merfolk during the Permian period.
