Humankind by BJPentecost on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Homo Sapiens Generis are considered an endangered race and many governmental bodies around the world have instituted protective measures to ensure the preservation of their kind. It is difficult to establish an accurate census but estimates conclude that few as 1.5 million Human beings may exist in the current year of 1035 PPC, not counting the Legacy Humans rumored to inhabit deep sea and extraplanetary colonies detailed in historical documents dating back to the pre-Primeon Cataclysm era.

Humans exhibit significantly less diversity in their markings and coloration than other races. They are smooth-skinned with only the scantest fur and are limited to earthy hues characterized by variances of a natural pigment called melanin. Albinos and leucistics do exist but are extremely rare. Human markings are generally limited to little ruddy speckles known as freckles, tiny black dots known as beauty marks, and splotches known as birthmarks. Their hair tends to be likewise limited in coloration, again, due to the nature of melanin-based pigments. A well-preserved book of artistic photography dating back to the pre-Cataclysm era depicts some Humans with pale and dark splotches but such markings have not been observed to date.

Human eye coloration is also fairly limited. No Humans have ever been observed with red, yellow, orange, purple, white, reflective, or iridescent irises, their sclerae are always white, and their pupils are always round. Human vision also tends to be poorer compared to other races and they cannot see well in the dark.

Humans do not have fangs, claws, or tails and their ears only come in one variety. Their feet are always wedge-shaped and their heads always roundish. Most Humans are so remarkably similar that almost any mature male/female pairing can produce healthy, viable offspring. However, Humans cannot produce offspring with any nonhuman beings but for very rare exceptions.

A quite controversial line of novel scientific thought hypothesizes that Humankind is the progenitor race from which all other races were born. This hypothesis is currently based strictly on ancient written accounts and there is no empirical evidence to buttress such claims. Any pushes to have the Progenitor Hypothesis taught in schools have been roundly thwarted. However, the hypothesis has been gaining traction within a budding branch of scientific study known as biology. Biology is, in and of itself, still fairly controversial as some consider it lewd, inappropriate, and blasphemous to study such things.
