Fairly simple colours here, but I think they work. I started with the red, and as usual it's a bit hard to get the shadows on there using only red tones, so I added in some grey in the appropriate places, and I think this works pretty well. I didn't include too many shadows on the helmet though, as I felt that this would help to differentiate the two aspects, and suggest that they're made of two different materials. The purples were a bit more involved, as I wanted to show that there were a number of different materials involved in their construction. I think that I initially used the same pen for the vast majority of the purple aspects, with only the soles of the boots being a different shade. To try and suggest more of a difference in material though, I added some darker shades of purple as shadows on the sturdier parts of the gloves, boots, and the cape connector... thing. I then covered these areas in a second and third layer of the base colour, and I think that all together these seem to have turned out decently enough. I also used greys to add the shadows in the purple sections, as I felt that this would help to keep things looking different, and I think that's added a sense of depth and volume to these aspects. There isn't a whole lot of colour on the face, but I started with a very pale shade and built up layers of darker beiges and peach colours to add in the shadows, leaving a few spots of the base layer uncovered to act as highlights. This was another spot where I added in some shades of grey, particularly around the shadows from his helmet and around the eyes, and I think this works as both a realistic depiction of the shadows, and also as a more symbolic representation of the complexities of his character.

As for the background, I started with the central lines of the magnetic field, using an appropriately mixed shade of purple-y red. Once they were in place, I spread out from these lines with a few shades of paler purple, culminating in a blue band between the various lines. I decided to use these colours as I felt that they would give the picture a sense of cohesion while still having Magneto himself stand out as the central figure. Once they were in place, the final aspects of the picture I added were the reflections and hints of glare on the metallic parts of the costume, for which I used a white gel pen. It's a mostly subtle effect, apart from on the helmet, but I think it helps to sell the idea that these aspects are made of a different material to the cape or trousers.

So yeah, this has been a pretty simple piece, but I think that it worked nicely enough. If nothing else, it's a piece that really shows how I've progressed since the last time I've drawn Magneto.
