This piece is a good study! First I gotta say that you captured the likeness very well! You also have a good eye for detail like with the crooked nose, the little cut in his eyebrow and the hairline that’s higher and rounder on the right than on the left. He has an “upward” and a “downward” side of his face and you captured that well.

If you look at the forehead and nose bridge in the original and in your study, your version of the character looks a good deal more relaxed although you payed attention to the stare and the red lower lid skin. Do you see how in the original all the folds bulge up and pull towards the point right between the eyes – you opened that up a bit and gave him less of an intimidating expression. Also observe how in the original all the colour planes come to an end in sharp points and appear over all very triangular, that also makes him a lot rougher. Your brush is kind of inbetween round and square and you let the strokes sit like that, that makes for a more open and trustworthy feeling.

I think you could have been bolder with the colours – if you watch how they’re treated in the original piece, the reds and oranges are a lot more prominent there than in your study. Look how the reds, purples and blues are organised aroud his eyes and how much that improves his stare.

Sometimes your strokes seem a bit directionless – like down on the throat, there’s a lot of colour variation going on that doesn’t seem to tell that much about the actual form. You did a lot better with this on the hair and cheek bones.

Also, if you choose to apply the colours next to each other with a hard brush like you did here, maybe stay away from softening the edges altogether, since crisp lines are why you went for this style in the first place.

All in all it’s a good study, and as I said: Overall you have a good eye for likeness, as well in looks as in attitude. Keep up the good work, I can see you go places! O3O
