Kaiju Revamp - Jet Jaguar by Bracey100 on DeviantArt (original) (raw)
First mecha kaiju for the series which will also appear in the KMAC kaiju contest for this month. I will start by saying that machines are not my thing. I can draw organic forms all day long without any reference if I dont want to use any. Doing anything organic is essentially just knowing about certain anatomical structures and rules like "form follows function". Not that I dont draw impossible creatures when I want, because it is fun to break the rules, but mostly I like my creatures to have some sort of real world basis.
Now here's the rub, I know dick about machines. I practically have an aversion to them. If I didnt need to use a computer to work I wouldnt. If someone gets all Star Trek and invents a teleporter, Im selling my car that day. That said some of you noticed right away the elements of my sketch for this guy were VERY derivative or certain well known characters or designs. I rely pretty heavily on reference initially cause tech stuff that I do from scratch looks so bad to me. Once Ive got my sketch down Im finally free to start innovating and making things my own. For Jet I studied movie Iron Man, movie Green Goblin and a host of other tech/mech designs. I decided JJ would have nanofiber musculature supported by an internal skeleton and covered by overlapping shifting plates of metal for mobility. JJ after all fights using martial arts techniques and needs to be fluid. Having no other weapons in the film (Godzilla vs Megalon) than his fists and feet I didnt have to worry about weaponry. Which was too bad, I would have liked to have done some War Machine style gear but that goes against his film appearance (he wasnt made specifically for fighting, just ended up doing so). And just for an extra splash of fun I added some little glowies as indicator lights so hs creator can monitor how stressed parts of his system are getting as he battles.
This was both one of the easier (tech is actually faster to render that scales and skin textures) and harder pieces to do. The coloring took a while because of all the shininess (ESPECIALLY the silver parts). So there he is all done and I hope everyone enjoys him.
