Description

We'd been trekking for a while along the ruins of I-80 for a while. It'd been days of just walking and occasionally eating deer or barley. I missed civilization; in that moment, I would've rather been working minimum wage in a shitty fast food joint than walking. At least in fast food, I would've been able to eat something rich and flavorful.
At some point, as the sun was setting, we stopped for the night. I could swear I was going to collapse until I looked up at the sky. I'd barely paid it any mind for about 2 years at that point, but I took a moment to look up. I could see every star so clearly, like I was at a planetarium, except this was real. God, to feel that wonder again as I remembered what my ancestors saw before the city lights I grew up surrounded by.
My feet still ached and I was still dead tired, but I was awed. I was happy.
