I remember being so excited to see the 1997 SPAWN movie when I was a kid. I never read the comics, but the movie itself looked so cool to my 5-year old mind. I even got a small poster from my uncle to hang in my room (but had to return it because it scared me when I tried going to bed that same night 
One day I gotta have that poster hanging in my room!).
I didn't see the movie until years later, when the buzz surrounding the comics had already died down. It's not as good as the animated TV series, but it's a decent re-telling of the origin story for a mainstream audience. John Leguizamo is perfect as the Clown, he honestly keeps the whole movie together. He stays true to the character, and even has some funny one-liners here and there ("how come God hogs all the good followers and we get all the retards?").
The rest of the movie is your typical 90's cheese-fest, though not as painful as other examples in that category. The Hell sequences contain some of the worst CGI I've ever seen in a major motion picture, but we wouldn't be talking about it today if they were halfway decent. The REAL hell is the end credits sequence - unreadable font that constantly shakes, it never crawls upward in a straight direction, and it seems to have a major cobweb problem....something I never thought I'd say about the end credits!
Also, I'm not a fan of Spawn going mask-less for most of the movie. I don't know if that's just how it was in the comics, or if the actor didn't want to be behind a mask all the time....but he's still behind layers of makeup anyway. The makeup on Michael Jai White's face looks okay for a bit, but I always thought the mask looked cooler. Maybe they couldn't make the mask emote back in 1997? I dunno.
SPAWN is a moderately entertaining movie, but with all these endless superhero movies piling up, it begs for a updated reboot. Might as well!
