A bad omen by CloverCoin on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Twine's paws pounded against the earth as she raced up the hills, grass whipping at her feet as she dove forward. The world was dark and glowing, golden hours of sunset. Brushes of bright gold and red flicker across the sky, like rabbits paws covered in blood. She was standing over them now, air hot and tangled in her chest as she tried to find the words to warn her fellow rabbits. What could she possibly say, what would convince her kin to run? To run before it was too late. Looking behind her, she could see her corvid friend flapping down to greet her. Curious as to what all the fuss was about surely, but turning back to her rabbits, they all stood to attention now. The big black wings a terrible sign behind their friend.

Getting up on her hind legs she raised her voice to something deep and terrible,"Heed me rabbits! The black rabbit will come to our warren! Those who wish not to join his ranks, flee this valley!" It bellowed deep from her chest and echoed back to her own ears. The black wings flap around her. Black feathers distort her view and when she can see her kin again, they all have moon white eyes. The color leeching away from their fur. Aimlessly, mouths agape, staring up at Twine and the corvid. She can hear shrieks and caws over her, a high pitch of cackles. Another flap, and the world is dark again.

Twine kicks her sleep, her feet bouncing off the wall of her nook in the warren, effectively shoving herself into the other side with some force. Her head knocking hard into the packed wall. "Oww.." she murmurs and sits up to groom. She blinks her eyes, it is dark in the warren. But just ever so little, light pools down from a near exit in the tunnels. The light is quickly eaten up by the dark soil and tunnels. But dust in the air shifts, a breeze can be smelled even from so deep below. She closes her eyes and tries to steady her racing heart. She opens her eyes and they adjust to the dark golden outlines of her warren. "Phew.." she flops back down into the soft nook of grass. "It was only a bad dream..." She sighs again, something nibbling at the fur on her back. Still, try as she might, she ignores the bleached eyes staring back at her when she closes her eyes.
