Storm Giant (30min. spitpaint) by cobaltplasma on DeviantArt (original) (raw)
I leaned a bit more heavily into the 'storm' part of 'storm giant', figuring I could hide a bunch of stuff with clouds and fog, give a lot of forms looser shapes and then hit highlights and a few more cut edges to give hints at a cleaner definition here and there. Time-permitting I wanted to add a foreground element to give it more of a sense of scale, but as I was noodling on I didn't think I'd have the time to do so and hoped that the wobbly peak behind him would suffice.
Earlier in the piece the giant was a bit more amorphous, didn't have a defined face even, but as I rendered it more and more I gave in and gave him an actual face; originally it was like a trailing sphere of clouds, which I thought looked kinda neat but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to define and refine it well enough within the time allotment. The lighning cuts in to help sell the theme and to give some hard edges for your eyes to focus on, on top of adding another means to help define the shape of the giant, using bolts hitting his skin, bouncing off of him, etc., to help cut in and make firmer shapes.
