Description

Class 45 diesel-electric No. 45137 'The Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment (TA)' on the 14.25 Newcastle-Liverpool service comes gradually to a halt at Platform 11 in Manchester Victoria Station on May 20, 1987, past two carrier-bag equipped ladies obviously returning from retail therapy in the City Centre. Many of the 'Peaks', as they were known, were in poor condition by this time and this one seems to be no exception. You can see where the nameplate used to be. Manchester Victoria's Platform 11 is of note because it once linked Victoria with the neighbouring Manchester Exchange Station in Salford and, at 2,194 feet in length was Europe's longest railway platform. However, Exchange was closed in 1969.
