Some things have not changed over the centuries. In the 23rd Century Lieutenants of the Space Defense Force are still young pups who have to be watched over by their older and wiser Sergeants. If not carefully "advised" by their NCOs they are likely to burn out the Sodium fuel rods of their Vampire Space fighters (stranding themselves in deep space); lead their element into uncharted space debris (and sucking up a fragment thereby destroying a gazzillon dollar turbine rocket motor); dock the element in the wrong hanger bay (yes we know they all look alike lieutenant); conduct a "mock attack" on the Admiral's shuttle (he was not amused); or overestimate their ability to handle Relilum Whiskey and call a table full of physically enhanced Fleet Marines a bunch of muscle bound Shirley Temples (fortunately they had no idea who Shirley Temple was and believed the explanation that she was a Marine hero of the 20th Century). No, things have not changed in the military in many centuries.

Still, some things were different. The old NCOs are too professional to say anything, but one thing that was different from the old 21st Century is that some of those young pups look really really good in the newly issued EMAP (Enhanced Materials All-Purpose) Flight Suits!
