The Deck by Drakarra on DeviantArt (original) (raw)
Here we have a snapshot of Shadeport, the largest northwestern port city of our DnD campaign, and boy is it rife with rain, rats, and things that go bump in the night. While not all of the city is paved, the main commercial strip is called "The Deck" for the wooden blocks that make up its road. Made from the abundant ironwood that grows beyond Shadeport's city limits, the road is dense and yes, waterlogged, but makes for a cheap and easy-to-repair road. From drizzle to downpour, rain is almost perpetual in this part of the world, and the scent of wet lumber and hearthsmoke permeates the city. Mind your footing on the slick road, and your purses as you shop, for the locals are known to have sharp tongues, and stickier fingers.
And THUUUUS, we have a quick look at Shadeport, the capital of the Umbral Coast! Boy, have I been working on this piece for a looong time. If you've been following my DnD portraits, the half-elf Dial and tiefling Malikus (linked below) are assassins that operate from here. It's inspired in part by Seattle's history, with some druid magic and lich mischief sprinkled in somewhere. Crimsonight has developed some wonderful taverns, brothels, and other shenanigans for the city, and I am so excited to explore them!
I don't do many environment pieces, and I certainly have room to improve, but nonetheless I hope you all enjoy my illustration of Shadeport's "The Deck"!
