Supergirl Helping (25) by elodtrebor on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

...the story is the same on all of them. So no need to read it twice. Unless you really like it, I guess.

I wanted to show what I really love about Supergirl (and Superman, for that matter). It seems to be the kind of thing that movies are bored with showing, but to me it's the real essence of the characters.

I usually don't try to do two characters at once, because it just doesn't work well..and it seems that the detail also suffered in a number of these, but it was kind of an important idea for me to want to get across, so I made the many, many, MANY images and whittled it down to the best. They're not perfect, but I think they show what I want to show.

A man sits alone on a park bench. The streetlights provide a small amount of illumination, but he can't see it anyway. He is hunched forward, his face in his hands, trying not to cry. He is barely holding it together.

High above, Supergirl is flying her nightly patrol. She sees the man sitting at the bench, and wants to try to provide him with hope and comfort, and help him if she can.

Supergirl swoops down silently and lands next to the bench. She is dressed in her usual blue and red costume, the 'S' on her chest shining slightly in the dim light. She sits down beside him, noticing the sadness that seems to emanate from his very pores.

"Are you okay?" she asks gently. Her voice is filled with genuine concern, a stark contrast to the usual cries of fear and panic she encounters.

The man jumps slightly, startled by the sudden presence. He hadn't noticed her approach. "I... I don't know," he stammers, his voice cracking. He lifts his face to look at her, his eyes red and puffy.

Supergirl places a warm hand on his back, her fingers lightly tracing comforting circles. "You don't have to tell me everything," she says, "but I'm here to listen if you need to talk." The man seems to shrink under her touch, as if the weight of his burdens is too much to bear.

He takes a deep, shuddering breath before speaking. "It's just... life," he says, his voice a low whisper. "It's so hard." The anguish in his words is palpable, echoing off the darkened trees surrounding the bench.

Supergirl nods, understanding more than he could ever know. She has seen entire planets crumble, felt the weight of galaxies on her shoulders. Yet, she knows that pain comes in many forms and is no less real for being personal. "Life can be," she agrees softly. "But you're not alone. Tell me, what's been troubling you?"

The man, feeling the warmth and strength from her hand, starts to unravel his tale of loss and despair. His voice shakes as he recounts the events of the day - the job he lost, the girl who left him, the family that no longer recognized the person he'd become. Each word is a knot loosening, a confession to the night.

Supergirl's hand remains steady, a silent beacon of support. Her heart aches for him, and she wishes she could take his pain away with a single bound into the sky or a burst of heat vision. Instead, she listens, really listens, her super-hearing tuned to the quiver in his voice, the hitch in his breath, the silent sobs he tries to hide.

"You're stronger than you think," she tells him, her voice calm and reassuring. "You're sitting here, sharing your pain, and that's braver than you know." She leans slightly towards him, her eyes filled with empathy. "Remember, even in the darkest of times, the sun will rise again. It may not seem like it now, but tomorrow brings a new day, a chance to start over, to find your strength."

He looks at her, the emblem of hope she represents, and manages a weak smile. "Thank you," he murmurs. "It's just hard to believe that sometimes."

Supergirl squeezes his shoulder gently. "I know," she says. "But that's what I'm here for, to remind people that there's always a light, even if it's just a flicker."

The man reaches out, taking her hand in his. It's a gesture of gratitude, a silent acknowledgment of her empathy. His grip is firm, yet trembling. He holds onto her, as if her touch is a lifeline in the storm that is his life. "Thank you," he whispers, his voice thick with unshed tears.

Supergirl smiles warmly at him, the corners of her eyes crinkling. "You're welcome," she says, squeezing his hand back. "It's important to remember that everyone has their moments of weakness. That's what makes us human." The man nods, a single tear escaping to trace a path down his cheek.

As he speaks, the man feels an inner strength returning, a warmth kindling in his chest that spreads outward like the sun's first rays at dawn. Her words resonate within him, shaking off the despair that had clung to him like a heavy cloak. He straightens up, his shoulders squaring as the weight of his troubles seems to lighten.

"I've just felt so lost," he admits. "I don't know who I am anymore." Supergirl's hand is a reminder that even in the dark, there is a guiding force willing to help. She doesn't have all the answers, but her presence is a beacon of hope in the abyss of his pain.

"You're more than what's happened to you," she replies firmly. "You're the sum of your choices, your strengths, and your ability to keep going." Her words hang in the air, a gentle reminder that he has the power to rewrite his own story. The man takes another deep breath, as if inhaling her courage.

He stands up slowly, the bench creaking beneath his shifting weight. The wind picks up, rustling the leaves around them, and for a moment, it feels as though the world is holding its breath, waiting for him to decide his next move. Supergirl rises with him, her cape billowing slightly in the breeze.

"Thank you," he says, his voice stronger now. He wipes his eyes with the back of his hand, the first step in reclaiming his dignity. "I think I can face tomorrow now."

Supergirl gives his hand a final squeeze, her fingers warm and firm. "I have faith in you," she says, her smile a beacon in the darkness. It's a smile that has inspired millions, but in this moment, it's just for him. "And remember, I'll always be around if you need me."
