The myth is true by Em-j-akahana on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

'As I sat by the window and watched the mist roll in from the mountains I couldn’t help but think back to when I was a little girl. My mother would come to my side, pull up a chair from the table and watch it with me. I miss being that young, when nothing worries you and you believe anything your mother tells you for, when you think about it, why would she lie? She would take a moment to observe the mist, waiting until the majority of the mountains were completely obscured from view then she would sigh contently and tell me a story. The story was about a sort of magic, it sounds silly to me now that I’m grown but back then it was mesmerizing. She would say that the mist came down to cover the mountains so that the spirits that lived up there could light their lamps and move about completely undisturbed. They made the mist she said, they need to hide because so many of them have been stolen by people for their magical powers and knowledge. The mist not only gives them cover but it acts as an enchanted void, causing anyone who steps into it to become lost forever, unless they take pity on you and guide you back home. She told me to never leave the house when the mist rolls too far and enters our town in the valley of the mountains for when that happens, the spirits are coming down to visit and they must not be disturbed. Otherwise, they will take you back to the mountains with them and you’ll never be seen again. A ridiculous story, I know she only told me it to stop me going out and playing in the fog but back then I couldn’t help but try to look past the mist to where the tops of the mountains where and wonder if there really were buildings up there with spirits living with in.'
