Amtrak #3-4/ The Southwest Chief - September 1988 by evangaines on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

On the afternoon of September 14, 1988, we're on ATSF's Transcon outside of Seligman AZ to chase trains, while on our way to Huntington WV to chase NKP S-2 Berkshire #765 on that year's New River Train Excursions to Hinton. Soon, we caught Amtrak Train #3, the Westbound Southwest Chief, from Chicago IL to Los Angeles CA. The train was running over 4 hours & 33 minutes behind schedule & was making up for lost time behind 2 usual F40PH's, as it heads for Hollywood. Bringing up the rear is the Private Car, Virginia City, a Pullman Observation Car once owned by Famed Railroad Photographers Lucius Beebe & Charles Clegg. The Car was on it's way to LA for charters by the AAPRCO (American Association of Private Rail Car Owners), for charters on the Coast Line behind the Coast Starlight to the Bay Area. The train would arrive in LA, the following morning.
