The Living Legend in Oklahoma - Mid September 2007 by evangaines on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

On the morning of September 13, 2007, we're on UP's former Rock Island Line outside of El Reno OK to chase the Living Legend Herself, FEF-3 4-8-4 #844 on the Oklahoma Sooner Centennial Rocket Tour from El Reno to Waurika OK. The locomotive was on a month long tour celebrating the Centennial of Oklahoma Statehood, hence why the Living Legend is in the state. Soon, we caught the 844 & her train racing along at track speed, heading for Waurika, it's next layover stop. The Living Legend was busy through the 2007 Steam Season, with the infamous Puget Sound Doubleheader with SP GS-4 4-8-4 #4449 from Portland OR to Tacoma WA & back, the Corn Belt Rocket tour through Iowa & Missouri, The Colorado State Fair Mountaineer Special, This tour through Oklahoma, & of course, the Cheyenne Frontier Days Train. So it's safe to say, the Living Legend has been busy throughout the season, therefore still holding the title as UP's Living Legend Ambassador of Steam. The train would arrive in Waurika, that evening, while we headed to a local café for breakfast.
