Yokai Batch 4 by Fish-man on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

From left to right from up to down:
1. Holy shit, it's Tofu Kozo
2. Nuppeppos are sacks of flesh that hang out around graves. Apparently, eating their flesh grants eternal life, but they are so cute that how could you eat that :}
3. Dorotabo: Muddy Rice Field Ghost
4. Nuri-botoke mocks transient conceptions of buddha

I started this set off with Tofu Kozu, and figured I had to keep up a horror edge so that the other bits of the set wouldn't be totally overshadowed. Tofu Kozu is probably my favorite Yokai I've done so far, but Nuri-Botoke turned out kinda dissapointing. Oh well, I guess you take the good with the bad, no?

the story of Tofu Kozo goes like this:
you are walking on a remote path in the middle of rural japan. It's kind of dark and maybe raining, and you are pretty hungry. Which is weird, because off in the distance, you see a figure approaching you. As he gets closer, you realize it's a tiny child, about three feet high. He looks friendly... but deformed in a way you can't quite place... and he's holding a big block of tofu with a maple leaf on it. He quietly offers you a taste, and you eagerly accept his offer. At this point, the story switches around a bunch, so two things might happen:
1. you finish up the tofu and walk away full and content.
2. a horrible, violent fungus takes root in your core, as you're helpless as fetid spores erupt from your skin.
good story!
