Inktober Day 3: Bat by Foalies on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

The Popobawa is a large bat species endemic to the Islands of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania. One of the largest bat species ever recorded (second to that of Camazotz), the Popobawa is a nocturnal feeder, most recognizable for their large leaf-nose resembling a large, cyclopian eye. They are insectivores and opportunistic carnivores, preying upon animals typically smaller than it by leaping on them during the night, fastening them down with their thumbs and unusually long tail, and assaulting them, leaving them either badly injured or partially eaten. While they do not feed on sentient species such as humans, settlements of sentient species across Pemba and Zanzibar has caused many clashes with Popobawa populations, leading to Popobawa raiding villages during the night and assaulting men, women, and children of all sentient types. These raids have resulted in waves of mass hysteria and fear across towns and cities, with the scariest stories being instances where the tail of a Popobawa fastened the victim down in a... sensitive region during its assault. To avoid Popobawa raids, it is encouraged to tell people in the area if you had encountered a Popobawa, or sleep outdoors with others around an open fire, as Popobawa's are sensitive to light.
