Unforgettable by Galapagos-Girl on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

spoiler stamp by vakuvaku 'Cept this puppy ain't a proper spoiler, so there. Just a bit of writing and art to satisfy the itch I've had for the last month while I was too busy to make anything, really. If you haven't played the game or given into binge-watching on youtube, this scene follows Zelda asking Link, "Do you really remember me?"

____________

"In hindsight, one could say that Link never did say 'yes' to Zelda's inquiry. This was perhaps more a function of his taciturn nature, rather than a real effort to side skirt the issue. The question had been posed innocently enough - a woman's heartfelt desire to know whether any lingering bits of memory of a relationship a century past remained. But instead of responding with a reassuring affirmative, the knight had simply stared at the princess for several minutes, his expression inscrutable, until she began to wonder if he registered any emotion but apathy with respect to her allusions to their past. But when he walked purposefully closer to where she stood, smiling slightly at the yip she released as he swooped her up into his arms, she knew his answer. Foreheads pressed together, for a time their breathing was the only sound in the stillness, rising and falling in perfect harmony.

"Let's go home," Link muttered at length, never releasing Zelda from the circle of his arms as they began walking away from the ruins of the castle toward his horse. It was as good and romantic of an ad hoc proposal as can be imagined under the circumstances, and so they rode until they found the old Zora preacher, a bouquet of wildflowers, and an obliging meadow wherein to take vows. At dusk at the steps of the house he'd commissioned in Hateno, Link turned and gave Zelda's hand a squeeze.

"You cannot forget the unforgettable," he concluded, leading his wife inside and shutting the door. What he recalled at present would have to suffice, for new memories were already more than compensating for the ones that were tardy in their return."
