Anglo-Saxon COA by Gouachevalier on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

The arms of His Majesty, Æthelstan the Glorious of House Cerdic, King of the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm of Englaland.

The seven Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms are referred to as the 'Heptarchy', and are, clockwise: Essex, Mercia, Kent, East Anglia, Northumbria, Sussex, and Wessex. They have been placed in no particular order, except to keep from clashing with that thar ribbon thingy (which I believe is the Order of the Garter...)

The sigil of House Cerdic, the rulers of Wessex, was a golden Wyvern; the sigil of England as a whole was the White Dragon, which battled against the Red Dragon of the Welsh.

Alfred the Great's Crown is described as being studded with emeralds. However, it is listed in an inventory of jewels melted down by Oliver Cromwell at the establishment of the Protectorate. It's assumed to have not survived into the modern era. (Puritans ruin everything, have you noticed?)

No motto or the like. I did think of "Rex Unus, Septum Regna" (One King, Seven Kingdoms,) but it kind of threw off the rest of the piece. Any ideas?
