Frankie was sitting with some friends as I drove past through O'bryonville in Cincinnati, Ohio. I took this informal street portrait where I found him. I positioned my camera to include the store window background, it's atmosphere adding to the setting. After talking with him, a stranger, I learned he was a local boxer, which shows in his attitude.

Taken with my Hasselblad 500C with 80mm Zeiss Planar on Kodak Tri-X 120 panchromatic film in 1978. Later that year as I exhibited his portrait, at Summerfair an outdoor art fair, where he had the chance to view the final image and approve of it.

For the Hasselblad Master's Competition, in Portraits. It also is a street documentary, but as I took control of the surroundings I felt it belonged more as a character portrait. I resurrected this image copied from the original photograph, then printed on Agfa Portiga III glossy double weight, heavily silvered bromide paper.

This is what documentary street photography was in the film age, at least the 1970s. What do you think of this style of photography, and has it changed by what you see presently on dA?
