Back in the 1970s and even earlier, there was an unwritten karmic law, that if you hitched a ride, you should repay the favor to others. Some travelers would hold a sign, but in this case it was the tall hat I noticed, even outrageous for that time period.

These two young men had gotten a lift from me, in my 1958 VW microbus, and now we were parting ways, each in our own direction. I had wanted to include the highway atmosphere in this documentary portrait so I had left the edge of the car on the right and a highway pole barely visible on the left edge. We were all in high spirits and I was glad to help and they were glad to be helped. Life was different then.

As was, and is my style, I handed the camera to them to take a photo of me. Fair is fair. If someone asks I will post it.

Taken with my Leica M2 with a 50mm F2.0 Summicron on Kodak Tri-X panchromatic black and white film in the early 1970s.
