Story

It was difficult convincing Hera and Sinbad that this was NOT a sprint. The team started off strong, until Sinbad got bored at their slow pace. He kept trying to push too far ahead, leading to Jia having to call him back multiple times. Hera was no better. As soon as the mare saw Sinbad take the lead, she wanted to go faster as well. She tossed her head and chewed on the bit in frustration when Jia refused to let her gallop after the sighthound. It took a handful of miles before Sinbad eventually slowed and Hera finally decided to calm down.

Jia was already tired. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment whenever they’d spot another rider and their perfectly behaved dogs in the distance. It was partially her fault for taking two unproven animals on such a long trek, but she was grateful that the two seemed to be done with the shenanigans for now.

Soft sand dunes eventually gave way to craggy rock peaks. Lizards scurried between cracks in the smooth sandstone, their long shadows making them appear much larger than they really were. Sinbad watched them intently but left them alone. His handler had packed a lure just in case the sighthound ran off and ignored recall, but the male had been obedient thus far.

Roaming clouds began to obscure the sun’s rays as the team wound their way through the rocky terrain. It had been nothing but baking sun for hours now, so Jia was glad for the reprieve. Unlike her dog and horse, who barely seemed bothered by the heat, she needed to take occasional breaks to avoid overheating. However, they were still making good time. If they kept this up, they might be able to beat some of their competitors to the next checkpoint…
