Amrod and Amras - Lonely Stars by IngvildSchageArt on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

I can only imagine what it is like to have a twin, to be two parts of a whole, together and yet apart. And I can hardly begin to understand he pain of losing a twin.

This is Amrod and Amras, inspired by the variation of the story where Amrod is burned alive inside the ships as Losgar, his brothers and father oblivious to him sleeping as they set them aflame. The thought of how Amras would react and live his life henceforth was too much of an inspiration for this piece, especially as that is the only tale in which I have had any sort of feelings for the twins. They are not the most interesting of the sons of Fëanor, and so I had to take inspiration where I could find it.

Therefore you see Amrod here as a ghost, maybe Amras is simply imagining and seeing his brother before him, remembering him and ever mourning his loss.

That is also the reason for their design. Originally I thought that they had different hairstyles so that their brothers would tell them apart, but then I thought maybe Amras would choose another hairstyle after the death of Amrod, so that he would not see Amrod when he looked in a mirror. That is also the reason that Amrod is looking a bit younger, as I think this is many years after the burning at Losgar. I read that even elves age, tho slowly after they reach their maturity. That even old elves could grow beards, and so I tried to make Amras look a bit older, and more worn, because of his brothers loss.

As my final aquarelle painting in this series, I am very happy with it. I learned a lot from the process, especially about colors. And I hope you like it as well!

Cheers,
Iggy
