Avatar YiLin by Isaia on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

My entry to the OC creation contest [link] for the avatar fans club

While Aang and Sokka run after that strange new creature, Katara stays behind and looks curiously upon the statues in the inner sanctuary. Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. Men and women with different expressions...and she finds that one statue seems to smile as if it had been laughing for a thousand years.

Name: Avatar YiLin

Age: Lived up to Age 32, previous airbender avatar before Yangchen. 800-900 years before Aang.

Gender: Female

Nation: Air

Likes: Playing and goofing around with children, nature, ancient Air Nomad folklore, flight, freedom, her fellow 'sisters' at the Eastern Airtemple, and...perfume? ;)

Dislikes: (when she was quite younger) her old strict, dogmatic and overbearing airbending teacher; Master Eunhee, embarrassing/awkward romantic situations, violence and injustice against innocent people, having to put her duty as the Avatar above her own personal feelings.

Background History: More than 700 years ago, In a time of relative peace, the reincarnated spirit of the Avatar was born in a girl from the Eastern Airtemple. YiLin thought she would be destined for the mundane life of an airbender priestess, spending the rest of her days doing repetitious bending exercises, temple chores, and saying endless prayers and chants. Then, of course, came the day when her true destiny was told to her. YiLin started out being a shy, somewhat prudish child. But because of the stern, but fair, tutilage of her master; Eunhee, YiLin eventually grew to be a wise, open-minded and generous, (though still somewhat naive) woman. Seeing life beyond the mountains during her training, YiLin eventually learned to greatly enjoy traveling the world, meeting all sorts of people, giving help and protecting the small and weak.
Avatar YiLin is not known historically for being as brave and beautiful in battle like the honorable Avatar Kyoshi, as dignified and respected like the legendary Avatar Roku, or even as spiritually intune with the supernatural as Avatar Onsui. But these days, she is remembered for establishing a small abbey in the Northern Earth Kingdom, a sanctuary for refugees and the orphaned, an abbey that stands to this day.
She was sadly killed in an attempt to save that abbey, and its inhabitants from the attack of renegade benders from the west. Some consider her death as foolish and not at all fitting for a powerful being such as the Avatar, but YiLin would not have had it any other way.

Extra Info: As one of her earlier duties, Avatar YiLin was once called upon to look after the five-year-old daughter of the FireLord; Princess Hiashi, after an assassination attempt on the FireLord's palace. The child was sent away with YiLin to the Air Temple for safety. Hiashi was a spoiled, sullen girl who did not take to living with lowly AirNomads very well. It took a while to get over the little princess's temper tantrums 9__9;;;, but because of YiLin's patience, sensible amount of discipline and kindness with her, Hiashi grew to love YiLin as her own mother, and YiLin herself (who had dreamt of having children) grew attached to the child.

Ages later, Aang cannot help but sense the spirit of something vaguely familiar in Prince Zuko...even though he is not sure what it means.

(Yeah, I know it seems bombastic to create an AVATAR >__> but I've had this character in my head for a while and she wants to get out. ^^...and I apologize for the lengthy bit of extra info)

EDIT: I'm not sure if FEMALE airbenders are actually all bald. Though I do know that there are some buddist sects that have female monastics shave their heads as well as the males [link]
AND wear cute headresses ^w^ [link]
But perhaps if the female airbender isn't a priestess/nun/whatever she could have hair. :P
Like Malu the ghost witch (aka the new avatar character as seen in upperdeck avatar card trading website) [link]
