London and Western E3 0-6-0 by Jeffrey413 on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

History

In the late 1850s, a trend of a new locomotive was hitting the scene and all railways were trying the brand new 0-6-0 a powerful loco for mainly hauling goods and heavy traffic so the London and Western joined the bandwagon and order a batch of 40 engines from Wolverhampton in late 1859, and the classified as E3 as E2 was a prototype engine and were painted in green which was a joke but stuck over the years. The class was put on heavy coal trains and later regular goods along one was trialed on passengers trains which had to modified with metal breaks the class kicked on with many rebuilds over the decades with cabs or newer breaks and at one point air breaks but the class was becoming out of date so in 1890, the class was replaced by newer machines and the first withdrawals started and ended in 1901, when the last engine broke down and was cut up.
