Gateway To Faerie by jkrolak on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

It's said that the gateway is destined to appear only once in a person's live. Considered a mystery and legend, even amoung those who themselves are legendary, it is a simple arched portal apparently unconnected to any other structure, that leads into the unknown, the realm of the Faerie. No matter the season, time or weather, those few who claim to have seen it, and declined to enter thus able to tell their tale, describe the land seen beyond the arch as a green summer lit flowered meadow. Clearly inscribed along the portal's frame, the gateway promises a new life, neither better, nor happier - but merely something different. On the peak of the frame, a gem glows at first, then flashes - slowly counting down the moments until it disappears, to make its offer to someone else. For those who wait too long, hesitating or fearful of the unknown life it offers, the gateway simply vanishes once its gem goes out for the final time, fading away, never to be seen again.

Those who've heeded its siren's call have never returned to tell of their new adventures. The gateway seems destined for only one person, although on rare occasions a small group has allegedly passed through. Rarely their old companions are left with but a teasing glipse of what their friend has become, for they seldom stay as a human, starting a new life while the gate fades into a misty memory, likely never to be seen by their former friends again.

Here a young woman has answered the call, entering her new life and emerging as a centauress.
