Description
"Forbidden City" (Gugong,) (9in H X 12in W) depicts one of the principle pagodas in the heart of the Imperial Palace, Beijing, China, home of the Emperors of China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1420 - 1912.)
Yellow is the colour of the Emperor, thus most of the roofs are of glazed yellow tile. The rakes of the roofs are decorated with animal figures, the number of which signifies the status of the building. The procession is led by a man riding a phoenix, the symbol of renewal, followed by an Imperial Dragon. The last figure is the "Hangshi" a fantasy beast unique to the Forbidden city.
