Jynx by JoshuaDunlop on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

I've been diving with Cloyster, held an angry Arbok at bay, and even come face to face with a Gengar… but nothing sends shivers down my spine more than a Jynx.

It was late January and I was accompanying a rescue mission for a fishing vessel ‘that had gone missing a few days before of the coast of Kanto’s North Eastern shores. At this time of the year, large icebergs move into the waters causing a variety of problems for shipping and fishing companies. It also brought with it a number of dangerous Pokemon.

We were following the ships tracking beacon when a thick fog began to set in. Out of the mist, we saw a small island with black craggy rocks and shards of glacial ice. Pulling up we disembarked and trekked towards the signal, it was coming from inside a large ice cave.

Inside we lit red flares to help us navigate our way back. Strange hive-like ice ‘sculptures’ ran along the walls, and then we saw it.

The crew of the lost ship was frozen in the wall, one of them still holding the beacon. Suddenly a Jynx emerged, its flexible body squeezing its way through a hole in the wall.

Despite the uncanny humanoid appearance, it’s theorized that they were once a deep-sea species and evolved to live on the surface.

They have toxins in their ‘lips’ and jellyfish-like tendrils that make up their ‘hair’. Inside the sacks on their ‘chest’ are complex organs that can naturally produce liquid nitrogen. They secrete it through ‘suckers’ on its ‘hands’ and use its powerful psychic abilities to move and shape the liquid to its will.

We turned and quickly ran to the entrance following the flares. We found the entrance, only to discover another Jynx stood in the way. Its vacant eyes flicked around and liquid nitrogen oozed from its hands. Using a flare I grabbed its attention allowing the others to escape.

I flung the flare directly at it and it let out a loud screech! This gave me enough time to run for it. I flung myself onto the deck of the ship and was helped up by some of the crew. We watched as the island vanished into the fog and a wave of relief rushed over me. I was going to have nightmares for weeks.
