Paint of the day #100 by kayendraws on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

This is a photo study of a movie still from The Dark Knight (2008).

This is the 100th painting I’ve done on procreate.

I started doing daily-ish paintings at the start of the year and decided I wouldn’t delete them. My first 50 were really hit and miss. I really didn’t understand digital painting and I was really fighting it, trying to get it to do what I wanted without much success. After 60 I started to get the hang of things and I could start to paint what I wanted. I understood colour more and my drawing skills were much better. Making it much easier for me to get a likeness for the subjects I was painting.

To mark this I decided I would paint a still of The Dark Knight. I’ve wanted to paint this for a long time. Not only is it a beautiful frame but it’s weight in the movie is immense. It follows from 30 minutes of probably my favourite pieces of cinema and elevates this movie beyond the standard blockbuster and comic book movie. There were a lot of elements to this piece which I found daunting. The joker’s pose is hard to get right and the out of focus background made it difficult to paint. It unfortunately has a pastel look which wasn’t by design but more so because I wasn’t so sure how to achieve this out of focus look. Perhaps I’ll come back to this on the 200th painting.
