Description

I've been meaning to paint more Brontë work for a while and, in particular, I've been meaning to paint more of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, as it's such an underrated and wonderful story. Most of all, I've been meaning to paint the Huntingdon family for a long time because I feel like theirs is such a sad and poignant story that I had to tribute. I thought of making a sort of dark family portrait for them, but I felt like this was a more appropriate way to tell their story.

I had to have Helen painting and Arthur Jr. playing with the birdcage, but I struggled a bit on what I wanted Arthur Sr. to look like. I was torn between how he was described in the book and Rupert Graves' fantastic performance in the miniseries, but I knew that I wanted him to look ill. I tried to combine the two, but I'm not sure if I'm satisfied with the results.
