Autumn 22 - Taika

Death was not uncommon. Not for the wolves of Álmos, and certainly not for Grimm. It happened every day - be it illness, age or accident - it was simply the way of things. How nature functioned. Were one to fall to the ground and grieve for every dead wolf on the island one might as well consider oneself as one among them, as one would hardly have time for anything else at all.

Of course, the mysterious waves that happened at random season changes were sources of confusion, and worst of all terror - it appeared to happen to just about anyone, with no warning or reason. Yet, to the pragmatic mind - one that Grimm himself harboured - it was possible to grow numb to those deaths as well.

A swivelled ear to hear what had happened this time, and a short nod in condolence to those grieving over their loved ones, and the dark hound went on with his life.

It was easier, perhaps, when you didn't know any of the deceased. Only a few acquaintances of the dark wolf had met their fates at the hands of the island, the rest were all strangers, after all.

Except... This time the island had in fact claimed a wolf who carried the blood that ran through his own veins. A wolf who's ties to him Grimm had denied so long ago he didn't even remember, nor did it even occur to him to notice the resemblance the dead she-wolf, that so many gathered around, carried to himself and to the features of a one-of-many lover from long ago.

Without knowing, Grimm had been saved from having to answer to the consequences of a past mistake. To acknowledge an estranged bastard as his own, and all that came with it. He might've been relieved, if he knew, though even Grimm did not wish death upon those he hoped to avoid having an awkward encounter with. Would he even have grieved for the daughter he had never known? Or would she be reduced to a few quips about the tragedies of life, and how his blood is cursed after all. Such a bad idea to be born with it in the first place.

It is not for anyone to know how things might've been. Not every misfortune comes with a lesson, after all. Poets may sing about the tragedy of missed opportunities, of the eternal longings of those who are left behind with questions unanswered, conflicts unresolved - While others simply shrug their shoulders and move on.
