Iago from Aladdin by KyleFrisch on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

In Honor of Gilbert Gottfried, 1955-2022.

Here's Iago, everyone's favorite loud-mouthed parrot from Disney's Aladdin, voiced by the inimitable Gilbert Gottfried. Iago stands about six and a half inches tall. I tried to keep his design nice and cartoon-y looking, but I had a little fun using some different materials to give him some more interesting textures than just being felt-covered.

Aladdin will be celebrating its 30th anniversary later this year, so I was already planning to make Iago then. But, in light of the recent death of Gilbert Gottfried, it only seemed right that I go ahead and make Iago now, as a tribute of sorts.

As a kid, Aladdin was easily my favorite Disney movie. Now, as an adult, I fully admit that it's hardly at the top of my list anymore. Despite its nostalgic appeal, I'm no longer a huge fan of the story, and the cultural misrepresentation can be a little, y'know...uncomfortable. But one thing that hasn't changed is how enjoyable Iago is whenever he is on screen. I constantly send my friends the clip of Iago being sarcastically surprised from the start of the film. It's one of my go-to reaction clips. The film itself may have lost its luster in my mind, but Iago remains one of my favorites.
