Don't be upsetti by LadyIcepaw on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Here comes some more Davekat! Sorry, I know this is probably not what you're here for (or maybe it is? What do I know).

The thing is, the lineart for this drawing has been sitting on my desk for the whole week and even though it is so simple and unspectacular, I always really liked it, I just didn't know what to do with it. Today I had a lot of free time, so I decided that, instead of watching Hunchback of Notre Dame for the hundredth time, I could do some more art style experiments! :) I've been wanting to figure out an easier way to digitally colour my traditional lineart for a long time now, and the technique that I used here worked pretty well! It's kind of limiting, but I guess unless I want to work on a very complex drawing, it's gonna come in really handy. And while I was on it, I also tried to gain a better understanding for colour variations in my shading. I usually just use one colour to shade a whole character, but in this case the hue is different depending on the colour of the surface that I'm shading. Sometimes it's red, sometimes it's more purple or blue-ish. Um, it's kind of hard to explain, I don't even know whether the way I describe it here makes sense to anybody.

The point is, I like how this drawing turned out. It's pretty and cute and it makes me happy when I see it. Though I should probably try to illustrate the size differences between these two - I like to imagine that Dave is taller than Karkat, but I often struggle to show this when I actually draw them next to each other. Sweating a little...
