Mellalu by Lumdrop on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

So meet Mellalu, the gal of the hour. Part time main character of Chlorofields, part time writer, part time grump, full time thinker.
A very black and white thinker, Mellalu's sass runs faster than her discretion. When will she ever learn?

She's a selectively moody but mostly sweet kid who is actually not a kid at all. She is a creature called a "Tidri", but doesn't know it on account of being separated from her family and people when just an infant.
But she doesn't dwell on it. The past is set in stone but the future flows like water.
She can use her "ears" and tail as hands, which is a good thing because, frankly, have you seen her nubby little arms?

She is a hobbyist writer though and invented her own little language and script based on one word "nisu". Oddly enough, even though she invented it, there pops up occasionally a word that she doesn't understand. What it means is an issue of deep frustration and some obsession to her. I wonder if she'll ever find out what it means?
We'll just have to wait and see...

Bio:

In the past, Mellalu used to travel around the continent of Selva with her best friend Lolo. They worked together as Langilites, travelling around doing a good job keeping the jungle near pockets of civilization nice and tame.

Then the debt came. After a disaster that destroyed the greenhouse at an Albi colony, Mell and Lolo agreed to take out a loan to have a new one rebuilt, assuming they were financially stable enough to handle it. Coincidentally, soon after, Lolo quit his job as a Langilite and they had to settle down and "get real jobs".

Mellalu got a job at a restaurant called 50/50's that she really didn't enjoy, but she went and did her best with it every day. Even though she yearned for the life she and Lolo shared before they made that one misstep. Things got worse though, because, having a bad habit of speaking under her breath, Mell accidentally upset some very volatile customers, and her boss Befriem put her on a temporary suspension.

But not without making her an offer that Mell would be tempted by. A special rare flower called the Vice Idol (which has many fables and folklore associated with it) was apparently in bloom right now, up North. Befriem, a Yadhoul, believes she is in tune with a force called the "Voice of Grey" which inspires the Yadhoul to know things supernaturally. This is called a “hunch” and it’s how Befriem “knows” about the blooming flower. Befriem offers to help Mellalu pay off her bills until she can find a new job if she finds and brings back a Vice Idol flower...or to find her a different "dead end job".

Mellalu, being small and weak, knows she wouldn't last long alone in a dangerous jungle, but Lolo has grown complacent and frivolous in the time since he's been unemployed. Mellalu assumes he wouldn't go with her.

As chance would have it though, Mellalu and Lolo have a skirmish with some ruffians, who were trying to harass a traveling prophet. After all is said and done, they both know that both of them are concluded to take a chance on Befriem's hunch and step out of the life of stagnation they fell into, and embark on a new life of risk and challenges.
