Because I read that Pepe the King Prawn was originally going to be a mouse, but Bill Barretta (the voice-actor and puppet-controller of Pepe) said "We decided an elephant and a mouse was too easy". Not only that, but Bill Barretta was discussing with Kirk Thatcher a character based on his wife's aunt, mistakenly calling her "a little shellfish" instead of "selfish". From there, they began developing the character as a crustacean. Bill Barretta took further inspiration from his aunt, known in the family as "Maria Teresa Okay," by applying her accent and habit of ending all her sentences with "okay". And that was the origin and creation of Pepe the King Prawn. However, even if Pepe was a mouse instead of a prawn, I think he still would've been popular, been Spanish, been a romantic and flirty romeo and Casanova, inspired by and based on Bill Barretta's wife's aunt, and joined the main Muppets gang.
