OKAY so, I recently watched an animated film from 1977, called "Wizards". It's a pretty interesting one. It's not GREAT, but there's little sparks of ingenuity beneath the strange animation style and odd voice acting. There's a lot of things where you have to accept outrageous things as the way of the world, so I wouldn't recommend this film to my more logical friends. So in the future, 5 terrorists will use a nuclear bomb to destroy almost every life form on earth. Then, thousands of years later, when the radioactive dust had settled, life began anew, and humans mutated and evolved into trolls, goblins, elves, and fairies. There's two magical elves born to a dying mother, one is good, one is evil, you know the gist of how these sort of things go. The good twin, Avatar, is a scotch drinking wizard who sounds like a Looney Tunes tough guy, and the evil twin, Blackwolf, is a Skeletor wannabe who tortures little animals. Anyways, Blackwolf finds "ancient technology" and starts to amass an army to defeat Avatar and rain war down on the good people of the world. Here's the cool part, Blackwolf finds old nazi propaganda, and he has trolls and goblins and warlocks using fighter planes and tanks and WWII technology. It's so cool and dumb and cool. Blackwolf also has a robot named Necron 99, who is tasked with killing anyone who believes in magic. Necron 99 gets defeated by Avatar and is reprogrammed to be a good robot, who Avatar aptly names Peace. I'll stop there.
The movie is interesting for a lot of reasons. The mixing of fantasy and war genres is really cool, and the setup for it is even cooler. But my main issue with the film is that it's bogged down by unfitting characters. Avatar isn't portrayed as well as he should. First off, his design isn't very stalwart in comparison with his evil brother Blackwolf. Avatar looks like a Smurf reject with big bare feet and no face. Avatar is just an orange beard with a pair of yellow eyes that pop out of his hat every now and then. I don't want to give TO much away, because I think this film should be seen by my artsy friends, but there's a lot of other characters who don't seem to fit in, as far as their design and personality goes. Let's just say that if the makers of the animated Hobbit film made this movie, it would be a classic. So yeah, it's a hokey, ham-fisted movie, but it's got some charm that I like. If I had to pick one movie from the past that should get a gritty, live action reboot, it's Wizards. This movie has so much going for it, but even though there's blood and murder, it lacks the grit it so desperately needs.
ANYWAYS, I drew Necron 99/Peace, because he's the best part of the movie.
