Even if we don’t want to, we all are going to skip the “Best-TV-Show-of-All-Time” from a present period. Even if we are couch potatoes, we can’t watch all, and we have our prejudice tastes. Some people are more into cartoons, other just in classic movies, and there are the ones who prefer the material from Cultural Channels. In some instances, we are just going to plain ignore shows not only talked by everyone, but also advertised all the fucking time. This was the case with me, which I kept giving the cold shoulder to this masterpiece of Television since I was a kid, which gave us this legendary character. For this Halloween:
Buffy Anne Summers, from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.
When I was a little boy, I just heard over and over the existence of a very creepy show known as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, but I never tried to watch it: I was faithful to my Kid Channels and the National Channel, and I really didn’t like to get out from my comfort zone. Then, in my teenage years, once in a while I heard the name of this show again, and I said “Oh yeah! I remember that!”, and continued with my life. Then, I’m now and adult trying to reach for all the lost time not wasted on TV-Garbage, and I finally decided to give a try to this show.
It’s the story of Buffy Summers, a High School student who has just entered to Sunnydale High. She is a pretty girl with a very reserved profile, and some “controversial” backstory, and we soon find why: Buffy is actually the latest descendant of “Chosen-Ones” known as the “Vampire Slayers”, a selected group of people born each generation to fight against the supernatural forces of evil: vampires (of course), demons, werewolves, mutants, monsters, etc. She has like a Sixth Sense to detect the evil creatures, super strength, and even some Intelectual help in the shape of a “Watcher”. Buffy must keep this as a secret, but she also manages to form a little group of closed people to fight this war against the dark forces.
The production story behind this show is deserving of a Disney Film:
Joss Whedon once came up with the short story of “Rhonda the Immortal Waitress”, idea soon he would translate as a movie script known as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, trying to subvert the stereotype of the Blonde Chick murder by monsters on an alley. Fortunely, his movie was managed to be made on 1992…but butchered by producers, much to the dismay of Josh.
However, like Cinderella, fate decided to give Josh’s project one more change when a CEO from a TV Network approached him, offering to make his idea intoa TV Series, which he accepted.
Until this day, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is considered as one of the strongest gems on the TV Field. It wasn’t only a giant success back on its day, but it also managed to get a lot of merchandise, spin-offs, novels, etc., and turned into a giant brick of popular culture, even inspiring future projects. However…this wasn’t good enough for me.
Again, I have told already that I really couldn’t care less for this show back on its day. As a little boy, I really didn’t want to watch a show with a girl as protagonist hero; yes, I was a chauvinist son of a bitch! Also, it looked too scary, and I was a scaredy cat back then.
Once I was a teenager, I really didn’t care in trying to find an old TV Series to give it a try, since Video Streaming was just in training wheels back then.
However, after finally seeing how much this show managed to do, and even being an inspiration for other similar products, and seeing Halloween was coming, I said “Why not?”, and finally try this show for myself. So, I went to Dailymotion, grabbed the first chapter, played it and…it was…fine?!
Let me be more specific:
For this project, I compromised to, first, watch the entire First Season of the show, since it was only 12 episodes, and it would help to me get a pretty solid concept of this series. However, since day one, I was as impressed, convinced and please as I was disappointed, frustrated, and even annoyed.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is a big victim of the “Seinfeld isn’t Funny” Trope. I can see why people got so crazy about it back then, but age was charged its toll.
A big problem I had with this show was how cliché it was. I predicted many elements I hate that will pop out here, and it came true: the loser protagonist, the rich snobby alpha bitch, the “Keep-this-Magical-Bullshit-Secret”, the clueless mom, the Geeky Shrinking Violet Girl, the Chosen One, and all this makes sense in perspective. Like I pointed out, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was a giant success, and there’s always a collateral effect to this: Imitation. There is no doubt so many people got inspired by this show when they decided to create their own shows about a magical teenager or kid fighting against monsters, and this indirectly aided in burning out the charm of the original product.
Also, yes, the Effects got also dated. Thanks God this was before shows exploited CGI, but many of the costumes and effects used here look pretty silly nowadays. Without forgetting how stupid the fight choreography looks. Sometimes I feel like I’m watching a “Scary Movie” Scene.
And, yes, even if it did a so-so job for the moment, the mythology of this show also doesn’t sound that memorable for me.
HOWEVER, with all this, I’m not saying this show is bad. The entire contrary: it really managed to impress me.
Something I really admire about this show is how dark it is. Even being created on the late 90’s, it didn’t try to soften violence at all: there’s on-screen fights, blood, weapons, and even deaths. Yeah, this show really wasn’t shy to axe some of the secondary characters we manage to get to know for a while, not only making itself edgier, but also seeing there was always a true risk for the characters.
Also, I congratulated this show for not limiting its antagonists to vampires. At first, I said “Oh my! All the fucking episodes will be about Buffy stabbing blood-sucking orkos with stakes. This will get boring so fast!”. But, no! The show was smart enough to touch a long variety of supernatural creatures: a teacher who was a mutant praying mantis, a group of bullies turned into a pack of ferocious Hyenas, a demon breaking free in the shape of a robot, a witch taking possession of the body of her daughter, and outcast girl which finally turned invisible, and so on. Even if some of the ideas were stupid or corny, it really helped to give an identity to the show, and make the episodes a lot of fun. The show wanted to be serious, but it also knew when to relax.
I admit, even if I struggled at first, I got invested into the show steadily, and I even consider in watching the rest of the seasons as soon as I can. But for the moment, let’s talk about the Slayer herself, Buffy.
Buffy seems really like nothing special at first, but it’s a character that slowly earns your heart.
Buffy is the latest descendant of a line of warriors known as “The Slayers”, so, she has the duty of fighting the evil supernatural creatures which hunt after humans, especially vampires, and she must keep it a secret. It’s a very dangerous, and many times not grateful, duty, but, even if she most of the time does it against her will, Buffy is never afraid of fulfilling her destiny.
Hey, remember when the creator of “Times and Life of Juniper Lee” pathetically said he inspired his character on “Buffy the Vampire the Slayer”, instead of that other obvious Asian Magical Teenager? Well, he wasn’t really lying at all. Buffy acts like a very frustrated kid who tries to keep herself together by trying to live a normal life while reluctantly working as the Slayer. She hates so much to lie to her mother, and many times look like a psycho in front of her peers, but she knows how important is her role to kill all the evil monsters around her. Even if she’d rather do normal things a teenage girl, she always take her responsibility seriously, and she always make sure to protect the innocent people involved.
Yeah, she sounds pretty cliché, but we can’t forget she was the inspiration of all those characters we can think of with the same traits.
She is more than a pretty face, and she will kick your ass if you want to feast in humans.
Anyways, after finally watching the first season, I found like a great idea to draw Buffy Anne Summers as a Toy Girl.
When I needed to think of the pose, I didn’t have any doubt in who to use as a model: Saya from “Blood +”. It was just so perfect to ditch: both teenage girls, both kill vampires. So, I looked at many pics of Saya which I could use as references for this scene, and here you can see the final product, replacing Saya’s sword with a wooden stake in this case.
Since it was a Live-Action show, I really didn’t have any idea in how to dress up Buffy, or how to draw her hair. However, seeing the case of this work, I got the idea: dress her up in the white dress she wore on the last episode, with the same hairstyle.
Also, to reference more “Blood +”, I drew her with some bandages covered in blood like Saya in the third opening. She looks so great. Oh, and as the crowning detailes, I added the red feathers on the foreground like in the first opening.
This show was a lot of fun. It had its downsides, but it was still well done. Maybe I will watch the rest of the series, because “Cuteness has grown now”.
And with this I contribute the part for Trick-or-Cutey from the Porcelain Series. SO, what do we have for November? Actually, next time I’m going to get even with some dude I know. Maybe I can’t tell you about all the philosophical ramifications of Vengeance, but one thing I can assure you: it’s a line which is never straight!
